Meet Our Wine Master
Chris Rota is the fourth generation of the Rota family to work in the Wine Business. Now approaching the 60th year of his career, he has maintained and followed in the family tradition begun by his great-grandfather and grandfather who owned vineyards in the Italian region of Lombardy. His father sold the first few bottles of wine in New York on the day Prohibition ended and, subsequently, worked for the renowned Christian Brothers Wines and Brandy for 48 years. Christian Brothers Brandy was the largest selling brandy in the United States for decades.
Chris’ experience extends well beyond the vineyards, the art of producing fine wines, and the marketing of them on a national basis. He has also been privileged to teach and train others at major colleges and universities, preparing them for careers in the hospitality sector. He taught at Cornell University, the University of Nevada – Las Vegas (UNLV), Florida International University (FIU), California Polytechnic Institute (Cal Poly), and the University of Houston.
Chris was also an instructor at the Holiday Inn University, Ramada Inn Management Development Center, and the National Restaurant Association. He taught a wine instruction course for the U.S. Air Force Officers Club managers at bases in Oklahoma, New Jersey, Hawaii, and Kaiserstuhl, Germany.
Chris has distributed wines to major national retailers as the proprietor of his company and as the General Manager of Konocti Winery.
In 1999, Chris joined the V. Sattui Winery in St. Helena in the Napa Valley. A significant part of his role was training the entire staff both in the Tasting Room and in the Deli about wines and selling techniques. V. Sattui sells only direct to the consumer, but during the high season will see 2,000 to 3,600 visitors on weekends.
